The Hot Rod Art Book: Masters Of Chicken Scratch [Novelties]

| среда, 30 сентября 2009 г.

Hot Rods and art go hand in hand. Now there’s a great book that gives you the best of both worlds. It's the Hot Rod Art Book: Masters of Chicken Scratch.

The Hot Rod Art Book: Masters of Chicken Scratch is a book put together by designer Dwayne Vance of Hot Wheels fame. There are over 100 pages of killer hot rod art from an impressive list of artists including Thom Taylor of How To Draw Cars Like A Pro fame. Also included in the package is a CD with tutorials showing the process of how a sketch goes to a full blown illustration. The book has an on-sale date of February 2009 and is the perfect supplement to your car book collection. We’ll be picking up a copy as soon as it becomes available.

Shanghai Maglev Train: Faster Than A Bugatti Veyron [Novelties]

| суббота, 26 сентября 2009 г.

This video, taken on a trip to Shanghai, China, features the 268 MPH Maglev Train with comparisons to the top speeds of the world’s fastest production cars.

The trip from the LongYang Station just outside of downtown Shanghai to the Pudong International Airport is 30km (19mi) and takes roughly 40 minutes by car; the maglev travels this distance in roughly 7 minutes. It does its task in virtual silence with none of the shuddering you'd expect after experience our own homegrown Amtrack. The acceleration is gradual, smooth and you never feel like you're traveling at a high rate of speed until the train starts its deceleration or you look out the window. It really is incredible.

It's a great reminder that even the fastest of production super cars can still be schooled by a vehicle designed to basically be an appliance. But, if this appliance doesn't excite you, we're not sure what will.

Loader Driver Does His Best Dave Mirra Impression [Novelties]

|

Watch Joe the Italian loader driver one-up Dave Mirra's BMX bike skills with a big ol' Caterpillar front loader.

Dave Mirra thinks he's hot, jumping around all nimbly-bimbly from ramp to ramp on his little BMX bike. Joe the Loader Driver one-ups 'ole Dave by sticking an endo using 15-tons of bright yellow steel in the form of a Caterpillar. We're positive it's good for the health of the rental equipment. Jalopnik Holiday Gift Guide: Busted Knuckle Garage Trapper Hat [Holiday Gift Guide]

| пятница, 25 сентября 2009 г.

They don't call it the 24 Hours Of LeMons Arse-Freeze-A-Palooza for nothing; weather conditions at Thunderhill in late December usually oscillate between "horizontal stinging sleet" and "bad day even by Ivan Denisovich standards." The folks at the Busted Knuckle Garage, realizing this, sent me one of their trapper hats, which I had the opportunity to test out in the 37-degree morning weather at the 25 Hours Of Thunderhill last weekend.

The hat is pretty damn warm, just the thing for the Arse-Freeze pits (last year I made the mistake of thinking that the Arsenal Gooners knit cap given to me by my soon-to-be-ex-friend in London would actually keep me warm at the race, in addition to getting my spleen kicked out by enraged Spurs fans). Perhaps more importantly, it tells the world that you're a man or woman of exceptional automotive geekiness taste and sophistication. And for you Midwesterners, chortling condescendingly at what we soft, lotus-eating Californians dare to call "cold weather," wearing this hat will make you look like the gearhead version of the Slush Sweeping Guy in Fargo, which you totally want. It's $34.95; Tru-Coat™ is extra.
