A British technology company by the Qinetiq has been put in charge of a project to research and produce car parts that a derived from the use of Hemp instead of common plastics. The effort is a joint collaboration between Ford, the UK’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and HEMCORE who will be providing the Hemp. Money to support the project has been pledged by British Ministers in the tune of 500,00 pounds.
The research in agricultural based bio-components and materials for cars is not new to the industry. Henry Ford had been paying for research in that area starting in 1910 that by 1941 had produced the worlds first recycleable car. The mixed resins Ford produced were able to form into glove boxes and body moldings that replaced their metal counterparts. Take a look at the video below to see Fords first recycleable car.

The applications for Hemp have been various over the centuries. It can be frustrating to see how close we have come to early environmental progresses only to find that somewhere along the way we took the road more travelled. It is always interesting to see how far we have come and how far back we have to go.
