Toyota-Subaru RWD Coupes Reportedly Still on Track

Last week it was reported that the upcoming Toyota-Subaru (Toyobaru) rear-wheel-drive coupes had been put on hold. According to PR sources in Japan those reports are false and the coupes are still on track for a 2011 launch.

The joint collaboration between Toyota and Subaru is going to yield a coupe for each brand that will use a Subaru platform that will be converted to RWD. The car's will also feature Subaru's 2.0L boxer engine. The coupes will have different styling.

It was originally planned that the coupes would be built by Subaru at a new plant in Oizumi, but the current economic crisis mean that the cars will be built at Subaru's long-serving Gunma main plant.

According to a story run by FOX news, Prius owners are aware of their own pretentious, self-absorbed stereotype and are basking in the exclusivity. Ingeniously creating a way to worship not only themselves but also each other, Prius owners inspired the creation of Priuschat.com, a self-described online “support group”. The website provides several resources for Prius owners, including multiple tips for bagging out your Prius. One suggestion advised [which we quote verbatim], “Impress your friends by keeping your car clean with these WeatherTech Toyota Prius Extreme-Duty Floor Liners & Cargo Liner Mat.” In addition to hot-rod modification tips, priuschat.com also features - as the name would imply - a chat forum largely dedicated to allowing Prius owners to commiserate on the hardships of living amongst the wastrel dregs of society. As one poster on priuschat.com lamented, “I think that we Prius owners need a dating/whatever program, to hook us up with other Prius owners.” Vivid memories of repeatedly being shoved in lockers probably terrorized him, because the poster was quick to classify the comment as a joke, but did add that he does have a sincere “…inability to look at people with gas-burning cars as attractive.”

We are so stunned by the blatant arrogance, we can’t even think of a decent pedophelia-related retort.

Top Gear USA Host Eric Stromer Rolls Camry Hybrid In Hollywood [Eric Stromer]

Midafternoon last Wednesday, Top Gear USA host Eric Stromer's Toyota Camry Hybrid flipped after being hit from behind while traveling through the streets of Hollywood. The blow slid the car up onto a curb and the car rolled up onto it's passenger side. A decidedly stoic palm tree put a stop to the proceedings although no air bags whatsoever were deployed.

Stromer emerged from his hybrid unharmed but markedly startled and in a radio interview on fellow TG USA host Adam Corolla's radio show, Stromer dishes that his primary concern during the accident was spilling his newly purchased "triple grande nonfat latte." Not really. We're almost 100% sure the top photo, uncovered by the very strange-to-look-at Vince Burlapp, is a Toyota Aurion, the Camry's Australian sibling, and not the 2010 Toyota Camry. Though it isn't the new, next-generation Camry, it is a reminder America's best-selling mid-size car will likely get a makeover soon. Rather than the more bland styling of the Aurion, we suspect the next face lift for the Camry will include the sharper headlights of the Matrix and U-shaped grille of the new Corolla. We've also been told to expect the next Camry update to include at least one new engine. We do not, however, expect it to come in flavors other than vanilla.[Burlapp Cars]

If the new Toyota iQ is going to compete against the smart fortwo, an open-top version is going to be a necessity. We've already heard rumblings of a possible roadster based on the iQ's underpinnings, so a convertible option certainly seems possible. If renderings from Japan's Best Car are to be believed (we're not convinced), the Japanese automaker could mimic the fortwo's cabriolet style by removing the front and rear roof sections, fitting an integrated roll bar and adding a set of soft-tops.

The main advantage for the iQ has over the fortwo is the city car's extra passenger seats. Unlike the smart, Toyota's microcar manages to cram four belts into its tiny frame and a drop-top variant would make the iQ the world's smallest-ever four-seat convertible. While a credible contender to the fortwo cabrio is surely in the cards, we're still waiting to see the iQ rebadged a Scion and brought to the U.S. to truly give smart a run for its money.

The joint sports car effort between Toyota and Subaru has so far remained hugely secretive, but details are beginning to sneak out giving form to the highly anticipated venture. Several publications are making "informed guesses" about the basis for the car, assumed to be a shortened, two-door, two-seat version of the Subaru Legacy. Best guesses outfit the car with a 200 HP, 2.0-liter flat-four backed by a six-speed transmission and tipping the scales around 2,600 lbs. The word on all-wheel-drive is still out, but we'd bet the Subie would have it while the 'Yota may pass. Roll those specs around in your mind and try not to whisper the alphanumeric moniker "AE86."
